A group exhibition taking place at skep360 in Miami, Florida.  Three galleries will be presenting a variety of artists exhibiting explorations in abstraction.

We will be exhibiting a new series of works by Mayte Nicole.

Working as an artist since 2018, Mayte Nicole works primarily within the tradition of ink painting. Inspired by the sumi-e ink wash tradition of Japan, China, and other East Asian countries, the 29-year-old Nicole depicts surrealist scenes and the tropical landscapes of her youth in the Dominican Republic using black ink and paper sourced from antiquarian dealers. Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, she now lives and works mostly in Barcelona.

Known mostly for her breathtaking tropical landscapes, this series of works has Mayte gravitating towards equally stunning abstraction.

As with her monumental piece, ‘Esto es un Paisaje 22,’ first exhibited at our group show v00001, Mayte continues to explore the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi, which is centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. In these works she once again applies this philosophy by hand cutting every single paper by hand. The black and blue ink gives the work a strong even masculine contrast from the brown and cream tones of the light paper, creating a duality that the artist continues to explore.
