Richard Vergez

Richard Vergez is a multidisciplinary Cuban-American visual and sound artist who works in mixed-media collages, sound and installations. Vergez’s work tends to tell a story, many times with socio-political connotations. His work has been featured in esteemed publications like the Guardian and The New York Times.

Sticking with the exhibition’s theme, the ‘Assemblages’ presented at homework’s SUMMER SCHOOL are more abstract, playful and exploratory, mostly utilizing leftover collage pieces and ephemeral materials like packing tape or mailing envelopes.

Born in Philadelphia, Vergez’s has a background in graphic design and audio-visual composition. Before relocating to South Florida, he lived and worked in New York, where he was a member of the Brooklyn Collage Collective. His work has been shown in New York, London, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, and elsewhere.

Vergez is very active in Miami’s music community. He founded the alternative music label Noir Age in 2017, releasing limited-edition music from global experimental artists. His work scoring contemporary dance performances for the Cuban choreographer Ana Mendez has seen his work performed at the Adrienne Arsht Center, De La Cruz Collection, and other institutions.

Vergez will be performing twice at SUMMER SCHOOL. Once during solo Sound Performance titled ‘Hearing Protection’ which will be accompanied by his ephemeral installation ‘The Weeping Willow,’ and later on during a special night that he is producing along with the gallery titled ‘So It Goes - An Homage to Factory Records & The Hacienda’ with Mikey Ramirez (Technique Records) and a Special Guest.
